Brennans, Perth 2004

Ahh Brennans, nice place, friendly people and a good place to gig except for one exception. They have a noise limiter in the stage area, for those of you who dont know what this is, I'll explain. Some venues have a device fitted which monitors the noise/music level, it is normal a kind of traffic light system. It starts of in green and as the music level increases the lights turn to red. However it doesn't just stop at being an indicator of noise, if the lights stay at red for an unknown predetermined time then the electricty is cut to the band's equipment. Leaving the band powerless and suddenly acoustical!! While this is a good idea in theory for limiting the noise level in venues where residents have complianed, it leaves the band contanstly paranoid throughout the gig and as such getting a good performance is nearly impossible. Now it all seems fair and reasonable that bands should keep to a certain level of volume, however the noise limiter is set to such a low cut off point that an average snare shot will set the lights to red instantly. The result is a very muted performance despite best efforts and we did our best to do a good gig under pressure. In the end we did have a good gig and everyone enjoyed it, band and audience alike even though the noise limiter cut our power three times. So Brennans was a success of sorts and I'd recommend any band to give it a shot there, however just be aware of the noise limit, the drums will kill the power. So because of this paranoia I forgot to take as many pics as I usually do, but here they are :-
